Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is managed by US Fish &Wildlife Service for both the wildlife and community, including wildlife monitoring, managed wetlands and waterways, habitat restoration, invasive species control, grazing, agriculture, and prescribed burns. Rancher Pat Kirby has some of his 60 cows at the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge near Elk Grove, that he has leased for 27 years.   Established in 1992, the refuge manages Central Valley habitat for both local and migratory wildlife; it also serves as a flood detention basin right outside the city limits.

Tour host, Cal-Pac Chapter of Society for Range Management strives to promote the art and science of sustainable rangeland management through offering leadership opportunities, professional development, and promoting sound and practical science to students, practicing managers, and professionals.
